Pocomoke Based Radio Station WGOP Destroyed by Fire

On Thursday, August 18, 2022, multiple fire departments and the Worcester County Fire Marshal’s Officer responded to 1637 Dunn Swamp Rd in Pocomoke City, Maryland, to investigate a commercial building structure fire.

The initial call came out as a fire at the radio station WGOP, formerly WDMV, at approximately 11:34 AM. This call was initially posted on Eastern Shore Undercover’s Social Media pages and updated accordingly.

Firefighters arrived with significant fire and smoke conditions originating from the attic area of the structure.

Approximately 50 firefighters remained on location for 3 hours, bringing the fire under control. Fire Investigators determined the fire was accidental, originating from a failure of an electrical wire in the attic.

The WGOP station built in 1955 was broadcasting on the air at the time of the fire. The station is owned by Birach Broadcasting Corporation and was operated by Mike Powell. The building was not insured and is a complete loss.
