Cambridge, MD - Significant enhancements are set to begin at Cannery Park in Cambridge this spring, with Phase 1B scheduled for completion by late August. These updates aim to expand and improve the park's amenities, providing new features for both residents and their pets.
Phase 1B improvements will include the installation of benches and a lawn swing along the semicircular perimeter facing the event pavilion. An enclosed 8,000-square-foot dog run will be constructed adjacent to Washington Street, complete with fencing and a double-gated entry system. This design will allow dog owners to safely transition their pets from leashes within a dedicated entry space before accessing the main dog area.
Inside the dog enclosure, several Adirondack chairs will be arranged around a mature Kentucky Coffee tree, creating a shaded area for owners to relax while their pets play. The dog play zone will also feature custom-built agility equipment made from repurposed concrete culverts, including bridges, steppers, and tunnels for canine recreation.
The project is being funded by a $145,000 grant from Maryland's Department of Housing and Community Development through the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program.
In addition, city contractors will begin clearing space to the north of the event pavilion in preparation for Phase 2 of Cannery Park's development. This planned phase, which is set to break ground in Fall 2025, will include the construction of a fountain and a play circle. Funding for Phase 2 will be a joint effort between the City of Cambridge and the Department of Natural Resources Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) grant.
"This next phase of work at Cannery Park will bring several amenities to Cambridge residents that were originally envisioned for the park," said City Manager Glenn Steckman. "We can all look forward to the development of a fountain and play circle, additional seating around the event pavilion, and a dedicated play area for our canine friends."
With renovations and new features on the horizon, Cannery Park is being transformed into a vibrant community space that residents will enjoy for years to come.
