WORCESTER COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS SUPERINTENDENT LOU TAYLOR ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT DATE
Worcester County, MD - In a statement made today, Lou Taylor, Superintendent of Worcester County Public Schools (WCPS), revealed his plans to retire on June 30, 2025.
This announcement occurred during the regularly scheduled Board of Education meeting, where Taylor expressed deep sentimentality and gratitude to the school system he has been an integral part of since his days as a kindergarten student.
"Since its inception, my entire life has been woven into the fabric of this school system," Taylor declared. "From my student days to my first teaching stint in 1983, I have treasured every role I've undertaken here."
Taylor's tenure as superintendent began in 2016, but his longstanding involvement with WCPS bears a rich history.
As a physical education teacher, athletics coach, Assistant Principal, Principal of Stephen Decatur High School, and later as Chief Operating Officer, he has invariably left his mark.
Aside from these roles, Taylor established the Worcester County Education Foundation under his leadership, a non-profit organization that has benefited the school system with donations amounting nearly $250,000.
His notable accomplishments also encompass various community organization involvements and board participations.
Reflecting on the school district's achievements under his steerage, Taylor lauded "considerable positive progress". He highlighted the successful state accountability measures, the tech transformation undertaken, and the continued investment in the educators and staff.
While he refrained from sharing his post-retirement plans, Taylor extended his gratitude towards the Board of Education and expressed optimism for their upcoming search for his successor. "I am confident that the Board will appoint a leader capable of propelling our already triumphant school system to further success," he stated.
The Board, in response, expressed their heartfelt appreciation for Taylor's unwavering leadership and dedication to WCPS. The President of the Board of Education, Todd Ferrante, stated, "Mr. Taylor has devoted his illustrious 41-year career to this school system, leaving an indelible legacy behind him. We are deeply grateful for his extraordinary service."
Despite the retiring superintendent's absence, the Board remains resolute in their mission to continue the trajectory of success.
"Lou's dedication and pride in the school system will remain a significant part of his legacy," Bill Buchanan, Vice President of the Board of Education, commented. "We are committed to finding a successor capable of maintaining WCPS's current momentum and positive trajectory. It's a formidable task, but one we take very seriously for the sake of our future generations."
