Wicomico County, MD - Wicomico County Executive Julie Giordano today introduced her proposed Fiscal Year 2026 budget, which notably includes a reduction of more than $3 million in property tax rates. The suggested tax rate stands at $0.80 per $100 of assessed value, a reduction from last year's rate of $0.84.

This move is intended to provide meaningful tax relief to residents and businesses of Wicomico County, amidst considerable financial challenges due to decreased state funding.

In discussing the budget, County Executive Giordano expressed pride in presenting a financially prudent plan that not only eases the tax load on the county's citizens but also makes significant investments in key areas for future growth. "This proposal demonstrates our dedication to strengthening education, enhancing public services, and improving the quality of life in Wicomico County, even as we navigate the limitations of decreased state support," Giordano stated.

Giordano highlighted that the budget is a result of strong cooperative ties between her administration and officials at both the state and federal levels. These relationships, which prioritize the needs of Wicomico County above political considerations, were instrumental in crafting this financial plan.

Despite the financial constraints, the proposed budget fully meets the Board of Education's $55 million funding request, ensuring that local schools are equipped with the resources needed to effectively serve students and their families.

Further, the budget accounts for salary increases for all county employees, acknowledging their commitment and hard work in delivering essential services across the community.

Key elements of the budget include significant allocations for economic development, infrastructure enhancements, public safety, and recreational facility upgrades. These investments are made without jeopardizing the county's financial health.

Giordano emphasized the collaborative effort involved in crafting a balanced and future-oriented budget that aligns with the residents' priorities. She expressed confidence that the budget strategically positions Wicomico County for a stronger future, despite existing fiscal challenges.

The proposed budget has been submitted for review to the County Council, with public hearings and final approval expected in the upcoming weeks.
