Wicomico County, MD - The Wicomico County Council has proclaimed April as National Child Abuse Prevention Month to raise awareness and put efforts toward the prevention of child maltreatment. An announcement was made by State's Attorney (SA) Jamie Dykes that a trained assistance dog named Josiah will be joining the Wicomico Child Advocacy Center (CAC).

"We couldn't be more excited to have Josiah as the facility dog for the Wicomico CAC. He will enhance the services we provide and assist in the mission to reduce the trauma of abuse for Wicomico children and families," shared SA Dykes.

Josiah, a seven-year-old golden/lab cross-trained by Canine Companions, will play a vital role in providing comfort and companionship to the children at the center. He will be present during their forensic interviews and trauma therapy sessions and even accompany them at court proceedings.

Being a full assistance dog, Josiah knows more than 50 commands and has successfully positively impacted the lives of hundreds of children since his service initiation in 2018.

Adding to his skills, Josiah's presence and support have proven to be impactful during the most vulnerable times in a child's life. This association is a huge step towards making the lives of the children and families that the Wicomico CAC serves, more comfortable.

The journey of healing from abuse is not easy, but with the proper support and companions like Josiah, it becomes a little more bearable.
