UNATTENDED CANDLE TO BLAME FOR ACCIDENTAL DELMAR FIRE
Delmar, MD - On August 21, 2024, the Delmar Fire Department responded to Footbridge Lane in Delmar, Maryland, for a structure fire. The residence is a two-story, single-family dwelling located in the Bridgewood Estates.
The residence sustained significant damage, with a structural loss estimated at $20,000 and content loss valued at $5,000.
The house's occupant discovered the fire around 4:30 PM. Fifteen firefighters from the Delmar Volunteer Fire Department responded to the incident and managed to control the fire within 15 minutes.
The Delmar Fire Department has confirmed that the house was equipped with a functioning smoke detector that activated, assisting the occupants in discovering the fire in a timely manner.
Upon investigation, the fire was traced back to the second-floor stair landing, where an unattended burning candle was identified as the cause. The fire department has classified the incident as accidental.
