Salisbury, MD - In a heartwarming development, Salisbury Zoo in Maryland has welcomed two Black-handed spider monkeys, Sadie and Ripley. This mother-daughter duo recently made a long journey from Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo in Nebraska to join their new companion, Rozindi, the resident male spider monkey at Salisbury.

With the addition of Sadie and Ripley, the monkey troop at Salisbury Zoo is now stronger and will provide much-needed companionship for Rozindi.

To ensure a smooth transition, Salisbury Zoo is planning a phased introduction process for the duo and Rozindi prior to their first public appearance in early March. Visitors to the zoo can expect to hear a variety of unique vocalizations as the three monkeys gradually become familiar with each other.

Each monkey has distinct characteristics that visitors can use to identify them. Rozindi, who is slightly larger than the females, has a red tint to his fur. Sadie, at 25 years old, has a unique appearance due to part of her tail being amputated following a previous injury.

Ripley, the youngest at five, has light blonde fur and a flawless tail. Interestingly, Rozindi and Ripley are half-siblings, sharing the same father, and Rozindi has a special bond with Sadie since they were raised together in Omaha before their move to Salisbury.

The Black-handed spider monkey (Ateles geoffroyi) is listed as 'Endangered' by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) due to declining populations in the wild. Threats to their survival include habitat loss from deforestation, illegal pet trade, and naturally low reproductive rates.

Salisbury Zoo is proud to host these remarkable creatures, serving as ambassadors for their species and promoting awareness of conservation efforts.

Salisbury Zoo encourages the community to visit, observe, and learn about these extraordinary primates as they adjust to their new environment.
