TRAFFIC STOP LEADS TO ARREST OF DISORDERLY COMBATIVE WOMAN
Cambridge, MD - A late-night traffic stop took a dramatic turn in the 500 block of Leonard's Lane in Cambridge, Maryland, on March 20, 2024, leading to the arrest of a Cambridge, MD woman.
Cambridge Police Department officers pulled over a vehicle at approximately 2:41 am after receiving a License Plate Reader (LPR) alert for suspended registration. The dispatch center later confirmed this.
However, the routine traffic stop quickly escalated. According to Cambridge Police Department officers, the female operator, later identified as Latarah Catrice Benston, 33, became immediately defensive and belligerent, hurling racial slurs at officers on the scene. Benston reportedly refused to identify herself and comply with police instructions.
Despite repeated orders to exit the vehicle, Benston refused to cooperate or leave the car. Officers finally managed to remove her, though not without a struggle. Benston allegedly resisted arrest, making attempts to pull away from officers in attempts to refuse to be arrested.
Her disruptive behavior drew several residents out of their homes, creating a disturbance. Upon further investigation, it was discovered that not only was the vehicle's registration suspended, but Benston's driving license was also found to be suspended and revoked.
Following her arrest, Benston was transported to Cambridge Police Department for processing. She was taken before the District Court Commissioner, where she made her initial court appearance, before being transferred to the Dorchester County Detention Center on a $6,000.00 bond.
Benston faces a slew of charges, including disorderly conduct, failure to obey, obstruction and hindering, resisting arrest, driving a vehicle on the highway with suspended registration, driving without a license, driving on a revoked license, driving on a suspended license, and failure to display a license upon demand.
The incident serves as a sobering reminder about the importance of respecting the authority of law enforcement and the repercussions of non-compliance.
