Ocean City, Maryland - The charming seaside town of Ocean City, known for its pristine beaches and vibrant community, has announced the acceptance of mini-grant applications for two distinct plant grant categories.

These include the Beach District plants, geared towards fostering the local dune ecosystem, and Pollinator Garden Plants, aimed at creating or extending a thriving pollinator garden.

Whether you're a plant enthusiast or simply someone who values the natural beauty of our surroundings, this is an opportunity to contribute to the ecological balance of our town.

Beach District Plants, including beachgrass and other native dune species, are a vital part of our coastal ecosystem. Not only do they add to the picturesque ambiance of the beach, but they also play a crucial role in maintaining the dunes, providing a habitat for local wildlife and protecting against coastal erosion.

These hearty plants are adapted to withstand the often harsh conditions of the coastal environment, including excessive salt air and wind.

On the other hand, Pollinator Garden Plants serve the essential function of attracting and supporting pollinators. These creatures, including bees, butterflies, moths, and hummingbirds, are indispensable for the pollination of over 180,000 plant species and more than 1,200 crop varieties.

Without them, our food chain would be severely impacted. However, these crucial agents of pollination have been on a steady decline due to various environmental challenges, including habitat loss, pollution, and inappropriate use of chemicals.

Ocean City's Green Team, committed to a sustainable future, has identified the need for pollinator gardens as a Sustainable Maryland Action Item. They believe that cultivating these gardens would be a vital step towards mitigating the decline of these essential creatures.

The offer is open for residents or residential property owners of Ocean City. The plants from the grants must be planted within the corporate limits of Ocean City.

To participate, applicants can apply online via the town's official website. The deadline for applications is set for Friday, March 28, 2025. Successful applicants will be notified by Friday, April 14, 2025.
