Salisbury, MD - Drs. Echo Leaver, Erin Stutelberg, and Deneen Long-White, esteemed faculty members at Salisbury University, have been recognized as recipients of this year's University System of Maryland (USM) Board of Regents' Faculty Award for Excellence. This prestigious award represents the highest faculty honor from the USM, celebrating their outstanding contributions in teaching and public service.

Dr. Echo Leaver - Excellence in Teaching

Dr. Echo Leaver, an associate professor of psychology, was recognized for her unwavering commitment to student success through innovative teaching methods and research mentorship. Focusing on active learning and inclusivity, Dr. Leaver has made complex topics in neuroscience and psychology accessible and engaging for her students. She is credited with developing the 3-D Animated Action Potential Model, an interactive tool designed to help students grasp neural processes.

Her mentorship has guided over 30 honors projects and numerous independent studies, with her students co-authoring publications, winning research grants, and gaining admission to top graduate programs. Additionally, she has actively participated in the National Science Foundation's PURSUE initiative.

"Her innovative methods and dedication to fostering academic and professional growth exemplify her passion for education," stated SU President Carolyn Ringer-Lepre.

Dr. Erin Stutelberg - Excellence in Teaching

Dr. Erin Stutelberg, an associate professor of secondary and physical education, was honored for her teaching innovations and efforts to address critical educational challenges. She fosters collaboration and inclusivity in her classrooms and integrates techniques such as "ungrading" to emphasize student growth. Dr. Stutelberg has co-designed a course on teacher identity and wellness with her students, which was highlighted at the National Council of Teachers of English annual convention.

As a liaison for Professional Development Schools, she enriches the practical training of SU students while strengthening the university's partnerships with local K-12 schools. According to President Ringer-Lepre, Dr. Stutelberg's contributions reflect "care, commitment, and innovation" that enhance SU's reputation in education.

Dr. Deneen Long-White - Excellence in Public Service

Dr. Deneen Long-White, an associate professor of public health, was celebrated for her significant contributions to public health and community outreach, particularly on Maryland's Eastern Shore. She is the creator and director of SU's Eastern Shore Opioid-Impacted Family Support Program, which has trained over 70 community health workers to assist families affected by the opioid crisis. Her initiatives include peer health education programs and Narcan training to promote lifesaving measures.

On campus, Dr. Long-White has developed impactful programs such as Project KISS, which focuses on HIV and STI education, and her "Popping for Public Health" events, engaging over 600 students. Her dedication to vulnerable populations also extends to her home community in Prince George's County, MD, where she provides training in mental health first aid.

"Dr. Long-White's work continues to positively impact countless lives, reinforcing the importance of health advocacy both on campus and in the broader community," said President Ringer-Lepre.

The awards will be officially presented during the USM Board of Regents' meeting in April.
