Georgetown, DE - In the town of Georgetown, Delaware, the entire Sussex County community is mourning as we wake up to sadness and loss. The community finds itself grappling with the tragic loss of a young public servant whose promising career was cut short in an act of heroism.


Thomas Wilson Berry III, affectionately known as Tommy by friends and family, was a beacon of service and dedication, epitomizing the essence of public service and its sacrifices. Tommy tragically lost his life on Tuesday afternoon, August 13, 2024, in a post that was published here on Eastern Shore Undercover's social media pages while assisting a motorist involved in a vehicle crash.


The incident, which transpired on the U.S. 9/Lewes-Georgetown Highway, remains under investigation by the Delaware State Police.


In addition to his role as a logistics technician for the County's Emergency Medical Services division, Tommy was an avid volunteer firefighter with the Georgetown and Ellendale fire companies. His indomitable spirit and dedication to service were just a few of the virtues that set Tommy Berry apart.


In honor of Tommy, county flags flutter at half-staff while processions of public safety personnel line the streets of Georgetown in a solemn salute to their fallen comrade.
