In a bid to protect threatened and endangered beach-nesters and migratory shorebirds, the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) will close The Point at Cape Henlopen State Park, including a stretch of ocean and bay beach, from Friday, March 1.

The Point, known for its rich and unique biodiversity, has been closing annually since 1993 during most of the spring and summer seasons. This annual closure aids in the conservation of various species, including piping plovers, American oystercatchers, least terns, red knots, and others.

The Point's nesting habitat on the ocean side will welcome back visitors from Sept. 1. However, the bayside beach will remain off-limits until Oct. 1, serving as a safe space for shorebirds migrating south for the winter.

Working hand-in-hand since 1990, the DNREC Divisions of Parks and Recreation, Fish and Wildlife, and Watershed Stewardship have implemented a comprehensive management plan to boost shorebird populations in Delaware.

These measures reflect Delaware's dedication to environmental stewardship and commitment to preserving its native species for future generations to admire and enjoy.
