TASER DEPLOYMENT ASSISTS IN APPREHENSION OF A FLEEING SUSPECT
Cambridge, MD - On February 28, 2024, Cambridge Police Department officers conducted a traffic stop, which occurred around 1:45 pm on the Talbot County side of the Malkus Bridge.
The officers pulled over a car due to a tag violation. The vehicle was occupied by the driver, Aredelle Jones, and passenger, Duwanyae Smith. A Cambridge Police Department K9 Unit conducted a K9 sniff around the vehicle and signaled the presence of a Controlled Dangerous Substance (CDS).
Officers located drug paraphernalia within the inside of the vehicle. When officers attempted to search Smith, he resisted and attempted to flee the scene.
After a pursuit through a nearby field and wooded area, Smith tried to enter the Department of Natural Resources Park Management building on Bolingbrook Point Drive but was unsuccessful due to locked doors. Officers were able to apprehend Smith using a departmental-issued Taser.
Following standard protocol, Talbot County EMS was summoned to the scene due to the deployment of the Taser. Smith was transported to the University of Maryland Shore Medical Center at Cambridge (UMSMC), however, once at UMSMC, Smith created further disturbances and tried to discard more CDS/Drugs he had concealed.
Officers were successful in recovering a quantity of Crack Cocaine.
After being treated at UMSMC, Smith was transported to the Cambridge Police Department for processing. He made an initial appearance before a Court Commissioner and was subsequently turned over to the Dorchester County Detention Center on No Bond.
Smith was charged with the following:
- CDS Possession with Intent to Distribute Narcotic
- CDS Possession Not Cannabis
- Obstruct and Hindering
- Tampering with Evidence
- Resist Arrest
- CDS Possession Paraphernalia
- Burglary 4th Degree Attempt
The driver, Aredelle Jones, was found to be operating the vehicle without a license. Jones was released with a traffic citation for Driving Without a License.
