STATE FIRE MARSHALS OFFICE BELIEVE EASTON YMCA FIRE STARTED BY PARTY SUPPLIES BEING IGNITED
Talbot County, MD - On January 11, a fire broke out at the YMCA of the Chesapeake, located at 202 Peachblossom Road in Easton, Talbot County, Maryland. The incident resulted in an estimated loss of $20,000 in damages.
The incident was initially detected by the alarm company and employees within the building. Quick action by the Easton Volunteer Fire Department, with 21 firefighters responding to the alarm, ensured that the fire was under control within 56 minutes.
The fire originated in the second-floor rear storage hallway, where what appears to be a pile of party supplies had been ignited. Thankfully, the YMCA's fire alarm and sprinkler system were fully functional and activated at the time of the incident.
This undoubtedly contributed significantly to keeping the fire within a manageable size and preventing it from spreading to other parts of the building.
Authorities are currently investigating the incident and preliminary reports suggest that the cause of the fire was incendiary. That means the fire may have been intentionally started using the party supplies.
Further investigation into the incident is ongoing and anyone with relevant information about the incident is encouraged to reach out to the Upper Eastern Regional Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal at 410-819-3500.
