Salisbury, MD - On October 15, 2024, Sergeant Ben Koons was honored as the 2024 Firefighter of the Year for the Salisbury Fire Department (SFD). Sgt. Koons, nominated and selected by his fellow firefighters, received one of the department's highest honors, recognizing his exemplary service and leadership.

Promoted to Sergeant earlier this year, Sgt. Koons has demonstrated a proactive approach to leadership and crew management. His dedication was highlighted by a sentinel event in 2024, during a call for a hazardous condition at a local residence.

Upon arrival, SFD personnel discovered a leaking fuel oil tank in the basement of a rental home. Concerned for the safety of the family, including a mother and her children, Sgt. Koons determined that the home was unfit for their continued stay.

After ensuring the situation was mitigated and contacting the proper agencies, Sgt. Koons went above and beyond by personally reserving a hotel room for the displaced family, paying for their accommodation out of his pocket.

Sgt. Koons' selfless actions reflect not only his character but also the core values of the Salisbury Fire Department and the City of Salisbury. His commitment to the community and willingness to go the extra mile exemplify why he is truly deserving of this honor.

The Firefighter of the Year award was presented to Sgt. Koons by Fire Chief Rob Frampton and Mayor Randy Taylor in a ceremony at the Fire Museum at Fire Station 16. Sgt. Koons' family was in attendance, along with his shift and co-workers, to celebrate this well-deserved recognition.
