SALISBURY ZOO'S OCELOT ANAHI HEADS TO BUFFALO ZOO AS PART OF BREEDING STRATEGY
Salisbury, Maryland-Exciting news from the Salisbury Zoo: Anahi, their resident ocelot, has been transferred to the Buffalo Zoo as part of a strategic breeding recommendation from the Species Survival Plan (SSP).
Despite the Salisbury Zoo not being an official member of the SSP, they are thrilled to be partaking in and supporting its mission.
They take great pride in assisting in breeding programs aimed at promoting genetic diversity among ocelot populations in accredited zoos throughout the U.S.
Anahi's transition took place on October 1, 2024, when she was paired with a male ocelot, bolstering the SSP's critical work.
The SSP's responsibility lies in meticulously analyzing the genetic breakdown of U.S. ocelots to decide which individuals are most advantageous to breed. This substantial conservation initiative aims to sustain a healthy and viable population of this endangered species.
In reciprocity, a male ocelot from Caldwell Zoo in Texas will soon call the Salisbury Zoo home. His arrival is anticipated this autumn, weather permitting. To ensure the newest member of their family feels at home, the Salisbury Zoo's dedicated staff is presently refurbishing the ocelot exhibit.
Chuck Eicholz, the Director at the Salisbury Zoo, expressed his pride in contributing to the Species Survival Plan and participating in the conservation efforts for these truly amazing animals. "We eagerly look forward to introducing our newest ocelot and pledge our continued support for this significant program."
