Wicomico County, MD - The City of Salisbury and Salisbury Fire Department have recently been awarded a $542,000 grant to bolster their efforts in combating opioid overdose and addiction. The grant is provided by Maryland's Office of Overdose Response and will span over two years.

The grant is set to augment current response efforts to opioid overdose and addiction, as well as enhance community outreach and educational initiatives.

Salisbury Fire Department has planned to utilize the grant to expand its buprenorphine program, a key resource in treating opioid addiction.

The funds will also be deployed to strengthen the partnership between the fire department and TidalHealth. A key part of this collaboration aims to improve coordination and access to treatment for individuals who have experienced opioid overdoses.

The Salisbury Wicomico Integrated Firstcare Team (SWIFT), a pioneering health initiative operated by the Salisbury Fire Department and TidalHealth, will also derive great benefit from this grant. SWIFT aims to curtail unnecessary strain on the Emergency Medical Services and emergency departments.

Teaching sessions on the dangers of drug use will be extended to 7th through 10th graders and adult groups within the community, as part of the planned community outreach and educational efforts.

Salisbury Fire Chief Rob Frampton expressed hope that the grant would enhance the current efforts in education, response, and treatment of opioid use within the community.

Katherine Rodgers, TidalHealth Director of Community Health Initiatives, expressed her excitement about the opportunity to further their partnership with the fire department. Rodgers explains that the funding will aid in the fight against opioid misuse and overdoses through prevention, harm reduction, and increased access to treatment.

This grant will also assist in offsetting salary and educational expenses associated with increasing the operational times of these critical programs.

The grant is subject to a final approval by the City Council, with a vote due at its meeting on January 27.
