State of DE - The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC), through its Division of Fish and Wildlife, will host a public meeting to provide updates and gather feedback on the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission's (ASMFC) horseshoe crab management plan.
The meeting is scheduled for Thursday, March 27, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Little Creek Hunter Education Training Center, located at 3018 Bayside Drive, Dover, DE. Information for virtual attendance is available on the ASMFC website.
The primary focus of the meeting will be proposed changes to the existing management plan. These updates include allowing the ASMFC Management Board to establish multi-year specifications for the male-only harvest of horseshoe crabs.
Additional topics for discussion will include potential options for managing male-only harvest limits, implementing seasonal harvest restrictions, and setting harvest caps for Maryland and Virginia.
The proposed revisions are based on recommendations developed during an ASMFC Horseshoe Crab Management Objectives workshop held last year in Lewes.
This workshop brought together key stakeholders, including commercial harvesters, conservationists, biomedical representatives, and fishery managers, to evaluate and refine management objectives for the Delaware Bay-origin horseshoe crab fishery.
Members of the public are encouraged to attend the meeting and share their input on these important changes affecting the horseshoe crab population and related industries.
For further details about the public meeting, residents may contact the DNREC Fisheries Section.
