Responding to an active shooter situation, Officer Duarte lost his life in the line of duty. The incident also left two additional officers and three hospital staff members injured, though they are reported to be in stable condition.

Officer Duarte is remembered for beginning his law enforcement career as a seasonal officer with the Ocean City Police Department in 2016.
