OCEAN CITY POLICE CHIEF ROSS BUZZURO ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT
Ocean City, MD - A legacy of service, safety, and community, built over a decade, is set to end as Ocean City Police Chief Ross Buzzuro announces his retirement. After leading the Ocean City Police Department (OCPD) for 11 meaningful years, Chief Buzzuro is ready to pass on the baton to Captain Michael Colbert, who will take over as the Interim Chief effective November 1, 2024.
Chief Buzzuro's tenure has been marked by substantial progress. The Department, under his steady guidance, encompasses nearly 100 full-time officers, over 100 seasonal officers, public safety aides, and around 20 civilian employees.
Moreover, his tenure witnessed the implementation of several law enforcement initiatives and crime prevention strategies, robust collaborations within the organization and the larger community, and the proficient management of the Department's substantial budget.
One of Chief Buzzuro's most noteworthy contributions is his effort against unsanctioned motor events. He joined hands with city leaders to forward legislation for a Special Event Zone, effectively ensuring enhanced safety and enforcing stricter regulations during periods of heavy traffic.
Reflecting on his time at the OCPD, Chief Buzzuro said, "It has been an honor to serve the residents and visitors of Ocean City and to work alongside the dedicated men and women of the Ocean City Police Department. While bittersweet, it is the right time for me to step away to allow the transition to occur prior to the summer season."
With nearly 40 years in law enforcement, starting as a police cadet in Baltimore City in 1985, Chief Buzzuro's career is nothing short of remarkable. His achievements and dedication have earned him the respect and admiration of his peers and the community at large.
Ocean City Mayor Rick Meehan commented, "Chief Buzzuro was the right chief at the right time for Ocean City. I hold the Chief in the highest regard and want to thank him for his dedication to the Department and our community."
The search for the new police chief will be a national endeavor. During this transition period, the focus will remain on public safety, proactive policing, and community partnerships.
And so, as Chief Buzzuro embarks on his well-deserved retirement, his legacy of service and leadership will continue to inspire Ocean City.
