MEETING SCHEDULED FOR BROWNFIELD CLEANUP ALTERNATIVES AT 317-325 LAKE STREET IN SALISBURY, MARYLAND

Wicomico County, MD - The City of Salisbury is taking significant steps toward environmental revitalization by launching a cleanup project at the historically contaminated site located at 317-325 Lake Street. This site was previously operated as a fuel tank facility and later as a waste oil processing site, raising concerns due to significant petroleum contamination in the soil and groundwater.
An Analysis of Brownfield Cleanup Alternatives (ABCA) has been created to explore viable cleanup options for the site. This analysis takes into account site-specific conditions, effectiveness, feasibility, and cost, as required by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) to qualify for Brownfield Cleanup grant funding. The City of Salisbury was given $1,791,543.00 by the USEPA to remediate the properties to USEPA standards.
The USEPA, in collaboration with the Maryland Department of the Environment, has designated this site as a Brownfield due to potential health risks from Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH) contamination, which can be harmful if left unaddressed.
To engage the community in this initiative, the City of Salisbury's Department of Infrastructure and Development is hosting a public meeting to discuss the ABCA. Community members are encouraged to provide feedback and participate in the decision-making process. The meeting is scheduled for May 1st, 2025, from 2 PM to 4 PM at the Government Office Building in Salisbury, Maryland. A Haitian Creole interpreter will be available to facilitate inclusive communication. The ABCA can be found on the City of Salisbury website.
The public comment period will run from May 1st to June 2nd, 2025. Written comments are welcome and can significantly influence the final cleanup strategy. Comments may be submitted by mail or email to the attention of Travis Huff at thuff@salisbury.md or to City of Salisbury, Dept. of Infrastructure and Development (Attention: Travis Huff), 125 N. Division Street, Room 304 Salisbury, MD 21801.
This initiative demonstrates Salisbury's commitment to tackling environmental challenges and ensuring a safer, cleaner future for its residents.
