MARYLAND STATE POLICE INVESTIGATE THE DEATH OF A STATE PRISON INMATE AT ECI

WESTOVER, MD - The Maryland State Police have launched an investigation into the death of Shane Lanham, a 28-year-old inmate at the Eastern Correctional Institute in Somerset County. Lanham was pronounced dead on March 29 by emergency medical service personnel.
The Maryland State Police Homicide Unit was alerted to the incident by the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services Internal Investigative Unit (DPSCS IID). A preliminary investigation revealed that Lanham was found unresponsive on the floor of his cell, which he had shared with another inmate prior to the incident.
Authorities have identified a suspect in connection with the case. This individual is also incarcerated at the facility but has not yet been charged, and their identity remains undisclosed while the investigation is ongoing.
Crime scene technicians from the Maryland State Police, along with investigators from the Maryland State Police Forensic Sciences Division, have arrived at the scene to collect evidence and examine the circumstances surrounding Lanham's death.
Once the investigation is complete, the findings will be submitted to the Somerset County State's Attorney's Office for review. The investigation is active and ongoing.
