MARYLAND STATE POLICE ARREST MAN FOR HIT-AND-RUN WORK ZONE CRASH IN WICOMICO COUNTY
Salisbury, MD - A hit-and-run accident and subsequent vehicle pursuit unfolded in Wicomico County, Maryland, on Wednesday morning, which resulted in one man being arrested.
The suspect, Jamal Scarborough, 27, was arrested after he drove recklessly through a road work zone, striking a 64-year-old utility worker before fleeing the scene.
The victim was rushed to TidalHealth Peninsula Regional Hospital and later transferred by aviation to Christiana Hospital in Delaware to receive treatment for his injuries.
An off-duty Maryland State Police trooper was nearby during the incident and was able to maintain a line of sight on the suspect vehicle. Additional law enforcement officers, including additional troopers from the Maryland State Police, Officers from the Department of Natural Resources, and Deputies from the Wicomico County Sheriff's Office, assisted with the pursuit of Scarborough.
The pursuit went down Airport Road, Snow Hill Road, and Nutters Cross Road before ending with Scarborough's arrest in a field close to Johnson Road in Salisbury, Maryland.
Scarborough initially attempted to swerve his blue Jeep into the northbound lane to bypass the work area, but he swerved back into the southbound lanes before losing control and driving into a roadside ditch.
Upon recovering control, Scarborough reportedly accelerated in the Jeep and ran over one of the utility workers at the site, which he then fled the scene and was followed by the off-duty trooper.
Scarborough is now in custody at the Wicomico County Detention Center, held without bond.
Charges against him include:
- First-degree assault and second-degree assault.
- Causing a life-threatening injury in a criminally negligent manner.
- Causing serious injury to a vulnerable individual.
- Attempting to elude police, among other related offenses.
The Maryland State Police Crash Team leads the ongoing investigation into the incident, with oversight from the Wicomico County State's Attorney's Office.
