INMATE DEATH IN SOMERSET COUNTY BEING INVESTIGATED BY MARYLAND STATE POLICE
Somerset County, MD - The Maryland State Police are investigating the death of a state prison inmate in Somerset County, Maryland. The tragic event has raised many questions and remains the subject of an active and ongoing investigation.
The inmate, now deceased, was identified as Virgil Bernard Robinson, aged 38. Robinson was serving his time at the Eastern Correctional Institute located in Westover, Maryland, when the incident happened.
The declaration of his death was made on the scene, making this event an immediate focus of an ongoing investigation.
A person of interest in this case has been identified, who is also an inmate at the same facility. Pending the outcome of the investigation and autopsy results, charges are expected to be filed.
The incident came to light when the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit was informed about the inmate's death on September 21, 2024, by the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services Internal Investigative Unit (DPSCS IIU).
According to the investigators, Robinson was found unresponsive in his cell at 5:10 p.m.
The Maryland State Police Homicide Unit is leading this investigation. It is supported by State Police crime scene technicians and investigators from the DPSCS Internal Investigative Unit.
Once completed, the investigation's results will be brought to the Somerset County State's Attorney's Office for review regarding potential charges.
