Georgetown, DE - Kevin Shorter, a 26-year-old man from Georgetown, has been sentenced to 45 years in prison. He received the sentence on December 13 for convictions of second-degree murder and possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony.

This ruling follows an investigation into the murder of 38-year-old Paul McCarter in September 2022. The judgment also included a designation of Guilty But Mentally Ill (GBMI).

"I want to express my deepest gratitude to our prosecutors and the Delaware State Police for their diligent work on this case. Justice has certainly been served. However, I understand that finding closure can be more difficult than achieving justice. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the victim's family during this challenging time," stated Attorney General Kathy Jennings.

The court heard that Shorter, suffering from ongoing mental illness, believed that McCarter posed a threat to him. The two men were acquainted, both being part of the local homeless community.

The case revealed that on September 7, 2022, Shorter waited for McCarter at the Royal Farms on Dupont Boulevard in Georgetown, Delaware, before attacking him with a metal baseball bat.

McCarter attempted to escape but was unable to outrun his attacker. After the assault, he was taken to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital and later transferred to Christiana Hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
