The events began on the morning of December 27, 2024, when officers responded to a report of a stolen vehicle in the 32000 block of Shoppes at Long Neck Boulevard. The vehicle owner had briefly left it running in the driveway when it was stolen, along with personal items inside.
By noon, the Delaware State Police's Troop 4 Governor's Task Force located the stolen car and attempted a traffic stop at the entrance of Pot Nets Lakeside. However, the driver, identified as Adkins, fled the scene, driving recklessly and violating multiple traffic laws. The chase concluded in Avalon Woods when Adkins abandoned the moving vehicle, causing it to crash into a tree. A 41-year-old passenger, who was a friend of Adkins, was still inside at the time of the crash.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported. Adkins was arrested after a brief foot chase involving the troopers and an officer from the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control.
During the vehicle search, authorities discovered drug paraphernalia and two baggies of suspected heroin. They also found that Adkins was driving with a suspended or revoked license.
Adkins now faces multiple charges related to the pursuit and vehicle theft, including first-degree reckless endangering, failing to obey police signals, resisting arrest, possession of a controlled substance, and several traffic offenses.
Regarding the stolen vehicle, he was charged with motor vehicle theft and two counts of theft under $1,500. Adkins is currently held at the Sussex Correctional Institution on a $15,440 cash bond for the pursuit charges and a $4,000 unsecured bond for the vehicle theft charges.
