Salisbury, MD - In a memorable visit to the Salisbury City Council, Jack Adkins, a student from Fruitland Intermediate School, took on the role of "Council President for a Day" through a unique initiative by Elks Lodge #817. This opportunity allowed Jack to observe the operations of local government and engage directly with various city departments.

Jack's participation was made possible by his grandmother, who secured this experience during a fundraiser hosted by Elks Lodge #817. The initiative aims to foster civic awareness and provide students with an inside perspective on community leadership roles.

Throughout the day, Jack toured key city facilities, including the Salisbury Police Department, the Salisbury Fire Department, the Salisbury Zoo, and the Government Office Building. His experience culminated with lunch in the Council Chambers, where he had the special opportunity to sign his own piece of legislation-simulating real-world governance responsibilities.

Expressing excitement about his visit, Jack noted that the Salisbury Police Department was a standout part of his day. Inspired by the visit, he shared his aspiration of becoming a police officer in the future.

"The Council President for a Day program offers students an up-close look at how local government operates and emphasizes the importance of civic engagement," said Council President D'Shawn Doughty. "Jack showed great enthusiasm and leadership, and we were thrilled to have him in this role."

The Salisbury City Council expressed gratitude to Elks Lodge #817 for their commitment to community engagement and initiatives promoting civic education. Appreciation was also extended to the staff across the city who facilitated the day's logistics and warmly welcomed Jack to each department. Additional thanks were directed to Wicomico County Public Schools Administration and Fruitland Intermediate School for their collaborative support in making the experience meaningful.

The "Council President for a Day" program not only raises awareness of government processes but also encourages younger generations to actively participate in shaping their communities, making it a valuable initiative for the city and its future leaders.
