FORMER DEPUTY STEVEN ABREU FOUND GUILTY OF 29 CHARGES INCLUDING RAPE AND MULTIPLE OTHER OFFENSES
Wicomico County, MD - Steven Victor Abreu, a 32-year-old former law enforcement officer from the Wicomico County Sheriff's Office, was found guilty of twenty-nine charges, including First Degree Rape, multiple counts of Second Degree Rape, and a range of other offenses. The offenses occurred while Abreu was on duty, representing a profound betrayal of public trust and a violation of his role as an officer.
The Honorable S. James Sarbanes, Administrative Judge of the Circuit Court for Wicomico County, presided over the case. Following a five-day jury trial, a verdict was reached on Friday Night, December 6, 2024, convicting Abreu of his crimes.
Post-conviction, Abreu has been remanded to the custody of the Wicomico County Detention Center pending sentencing. Sentencing will occur at a later date so that a pre-sentence investigation can be completed.
Abreu's crimes came to light in October 2022 when one of his victims courageously reported her assault. This led to an investigation that unveiled further atrocities committed by the officer, including several instances of using his position to sexually assault vulnerable women.
State's Attorney Jamie Dykes expressed deep disappointment at Abreu's misuse of authority and applauded the victims for their bravery in reporting their experiences. She also acknowledged the diligent efforts of Wicomico County Sheriff's Dept Corporal C. Kirkpatrick, Senior Assistant State's Attorneys Patrick Gilbert and Lauren Bourdon, and the jury for their role in bringing the guilty party to justice.
Dykes reaffirmed the importance of public faith in law enforcement and pledged support to the victims during this difficult period.
As the community reels from the shock of this offense, the case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of integrity in public service and the judicial system's commitment to holding individuals accountable, regardless of their profession.
