On Saturday, December 21, 2024, emergency services responded to a fire in Washington Park, Chestertown, Maryland.

At 12:39 am, the Chestertown Volunteer Fire Company, along with several other mutual aid companies, were dispatched to a residence on Roosevelt Drive, situated off Flatland Road, in Chestertown, MD. The alarm was initially raised by the residents who observed fire spreading from the wall next to their living room fireplace.

Thankfully, the family was quickly alerted to the danger by their barking dogs and was safely evacuated with the assistance of EMS and Law Enforcement who arrived first on the scene.

Firefighting crews arrived shortly after, deploying hose lines and entering the house to battle the blaze.

Upon inspection, they discovered that the fire was not just restricted to the wall, but had also spread into the attic.

After a thorough investigation, the cause of the fire was determined to be a faulty fireplace.

The regional electricity supplier, Delmarva Power, was called to the location to ensure the electrical power to the home was safely secured. Following the traumatic event, the family decided not to seek emergency housing assistance from the Red Cross, choosing instead to stay with their relatives.

Crews from Chestertown VFC, Kennedyville VFC, Betterton VFC, Church Hill VFC, Crumpton VFC, Sudlersville VFC, Kent & Queen Annes Rescue Squad and Kent County EMS operated for a little over 2-1/2 hours at the scene.
