ESCAPEE CAPTURED FOLLOWING VERY SERIOUS MOTOR VEHICLE CRASH IN DELMAR
Delmar, DE - Clifford David has been arrested and charged with multiple felony offenses following escaping from a correctional work site and getting involved in a vehicle crash in Delmar, Delaware. The 33-year-old man from Greenwood, Delaware, had initially fled from authorities while under the supervision of the Sussex Community Corrections work crew earlier in the day on September 24, 2024.
Upon receiving a tip about David's location at a residence on Whitesville Road in Delmar, Delaware, troopers were dispatched to the scene.
Before their arrival, David had escaped from the residence in a stolen Chevrolet Silverado with a 25-year-old woman and three children, aged 1, 2, and 7.
A short time after fleeing, David stopped the vehicle to remove the children from the truck, however the 25-year-old woman pulled two of the three children back into the truck. A witness who was at this location took custody of the 7-year-old child, who was not injured.
David crashed the Silverado on August Road near Whitesville Road. The initial crash analysis determined that David drove recklessly and at high speeds, losing control on a curve. This led to the vehicle running off the road, entering a ditch, and subsequently overturning.
The crash resulted in the serious injury of the woman and two children, who were unfortunately not restrained and were ejected from the vehicle during the crash.
David was able to flee the crash scene, triggering an area-wide search by the State Police. However, after searching throughout the overnight hours, the police were not able to locate him last night. Therefore, they applied for and obtained arrest warrants for Clifford David.
This morning, David was located and apprehended without incident on Sussex Highway near Salt Barn Road in Laurel, Delaware.
David currently awaits trial, charged with a multitude of crimes including Reckless Endangering in the 1st Degree (three counts), Theft of a Motor Vehicle, Receiving Stolen Property, Resisting Arrest, Vehicular Assault in the 2nd and 3rd Degree (two counts), Leaving the Scene of an Injury Crash, and multiple traffic offenses.
He was committed to the Sussex Correctional Institution, with a secured bond of $21,000, upon being arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 3.
