ECI FIRE BEING INVESTIGATED BY STATE FIRE MARSHALS OFFICE

Somerset County, MD - On January 30, 2025, at the Eastern Correctional Institute on 30420 Revells Neck Road, an intentional fire occurred in a cell located on Housing Unit 4, Tier A. The State Correctional Institution, owned by the State of Maryland, reported no injuries or deaths in relation to the incident.
The fire, noted to have been of an incendiary nature, was small enough not to activate the sprinkler system but did trigger the fire alarm. The discovery of the fire was made by the correctional officers on duty at the time, and it was quickly brought under control within a minute.
The incident took place in the early hours of the day but was not reported to the Office of the State Fire Marshal until later that morning.
Deputy State Fire Marshals are now in consultations with the State's Attorney, determining whether charges should be imposed in light of this event.
Although an intentional fire, it is worth noting that due to the swift action of the on-duty correctional officers, no loss took place, and no persons on the premises were harmed.
The cause of the fire and potential consequences for those responsible are still under investigation. The Institute's administration and the State Fire Marshal's Office will provide updates as more information becomes available.
