A late-night wrong-way driver incident was reported on Route 301, with law enforcement intervening before a potential tragedy could occur.

At around 02:55 AM on February 4th, Kent County Sheriff's Office received a BOLO from dispatch about a vehicle heading southbound in the northbound lane on Route 301. Deputy Jackson was in the vicinity and noticed the vehicle moving against the opposite traffic flow. He then activated his emergency lights and crossed into the opposite lane to initiate a traffic stop.

In a near miss incident, the vehicle barely avoided a head-on collision with a semi-truck, forcing the truck to drive onto the shoulder. The vehicle finally came to a stop near the intersection of Route 301 and Green Spring Road.

Upon stopping the vehicle, Deputy Jackson and the other officers on the scene identified the driver as Matthew Behler. The deputies noted a strong odor of alcohol emanating from Behler, along with several signs of impairment. Behler reportedly admitted to drinking earlier and was under the impression that it was only 10:00 PM.

Behler agreed to standard field sobriety tests, which he did not pass. He was arrested, and during a search, a spring-assisted switchblade was found in his possession. Behler was then taken to the Kent County Sheriff's Office where he underwent a BAC test, registering a reading of .20. After being processed, he was released to a sober driver.

Behler now faces charges including driving under the influence of alcohol, driving while impaired by alcohol, driving the wrong direction on a one-way street, failure to obey traffic control device instructions, negligent driving, reckless driving, and concealing a dangerous weapon.
