Dorchester County, MD - On the evening of March 14, 2025, a routine traffic stop by the Dorchester County Sheriff's Office resulted in the arrest of two individuals on multiple drug and firearm-related charges.

Authorities charged Derek Wongus, 19, and George Spry, 18, with offenses including possession with intent to distribute and illegal firearm possession.

Traffic Stop Details

At approximately 9:48 p.m., a Dorchester County deputy observed a vehicle exceeding the posted speed limit on Route 16 near Springdale Road. Upon initiating the traffic stop, the deputy detected a strong odor of cannabis emanating from the vehicle.

The driver, Wongus, and passenger, Spry, were both under the age of 21, making it illegal for either to possess or use cannabis under Maryland law.

Evidence Discovered

Subsequent investigation and a search of the vehicle uncovered the following items:

  • 62 grams of cannabis, surpassing legal personal use limits.
  • Five THC cartridges, each containing 2,000 mg of concentrated cannabis.
  • 52 individual baggies, commonly associated with drug distribution.
  • A digital scale containing cannabis residue, suggesting recent use for narcotics weighing.
  • A loaded Taurus G2s 9mm handgun with five rounds of ammunition.
  • $358 in cash, mostly in small denominations often linked to narcotics sales.
  • Multiple sets of gloves and mobile devices, frequently used in drug transactions.

Based on these findings, deputies determined that the suspects were engaged in drug distribution rather than personal use.

The combination of narcotics and a loaded firearm heightened the seriousness of the charges, as firearms are frequently linked to protecting illegal drug-related activities.

The two individuals were charged as follows:

George Spry (18):

  • Possession of a firearm by a minor under 21.
  • Carrying or transporting a handgun in a vehicle.
  • Illegal possession of a firearm.
  • Possession of a firearm during a drug trafficking crime.
  • Possession with intent to distribute narcotics.
  • Possession of drug paraphernalia related to distribution.
