Wicomico County, MD - Wicomico County Executive Julie Giordano has addressed recent concerns and misinformation regarding the State of Maryland's purchase of land for the development of Wetipquin Creek State Park.

This acquisition represents a notable step forward for the region, as it will establish the first-ever state park in Wicomico County, providing opportunities for recreation, conservation, and community enrichment.

A State of Maryland Initiative

County Executive Giordano emphasized that the project is entirely a State of Maryland initiative, unaffiliated with Wicomico County Government or her office. "This project is under the exclusive oversight and funding of the State of Maryland," she stated.

Recent misunderstandings about the county's involvement necessitated clarification to ensure accurate information is available to residents.

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) approved the $3.3 million purchase of approximately 445 acres from Mr. Donald Graham, including the historic Long Hill estate. The acquisition aligns with the state's commitment to investing in public lands for environmental and cultural preservation.

The Role of Wicomico County

County Executive Giordano attended the Maryland Board of Public Works meeting virtually as a procedural formality, but she clarified that, "The deal between the state and Mr. Graham had already been finalized. Wicomico County played no role in the negotiation, approval, or funding of this transaction."

Giordano further highlighted that private property owners, such as Mr. Graham, have the right to sell or develop their land. The county has no authority in these private transactions.

Historical and Environmental Significance

The newly acquired property, historically held by the Graham family, includes the Long Hill estate, which Mr. Graham has meticulously preserved to embody its Revolutionary-era roots.

The site's combination of historical significance and ecological diversity makes it an ideal location for a state park.

Once operational, the Wetipquin Creek State Park will feature:

  • The historic Long Hill house
  • Diverse landscapes that showcase the ecological richness of the area
  • A mission centered on preserving natural resources, celebrating local heritage, and promoting outdoor recreation

Addressing Misinformation

Recent social media posts and articles have circulated inaccuracies about the county's involvement in this initiative. County Executive Giordano reiterated, "The funding and oversight for this acquisition are entirely under the jurisdiction of the State of Maryland."

Residents are encouraged to rely on credible sources and official communications for updates and information regarding this project.

Ensuring the community has accurate information is essential to building trust and understanding around public initiatives.

A New Chapter for Wicomico County

The creation of Wetipquin Creek State Park marks a historic milestone for Wicomico County. By combining recreational opportunities with the preservation of local history and natural landscapes, the park stands to enhance the cultural and environmental richness of the region.
