CLIFFORD OWENS NAMED NEW PRINCIPAL OF WASHINGTON ACADEMY AND HIGH SCHOOL

Somerset County, MD - Somerset County Public Schools has officially announced the appointment of Mr. Clifford Owens as the new Principal of Washington Academy and High School, effective April 7, 2025. With over 25 years of experience in public education, Mr. Owens brings a wealth of knowledge and a proven track record of leadership focused on enhancing student achievement.


Mr. Owens' career encompasses serving students from Pre-K through 12th grade, embodying his educational philosophy centered on the "ABCs of education," which stand for academic, behavioral, and cultural growth. He has previously led a school recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School, demonstrating his capacity to implement successful turnaround strategies.


His vision for education emphasizes expeditionary learning, the development of critical thinking skills, and preparing students for the global stage.


Mr. Owens holds a Bachelor of Arts in Speech and Theology from David Lipscomb University and a Master's degree in Counseling Psychology from Georgian Court College. He is known for his collaborative approach, valuing strong relationships with students, families, and the broader community, and for promoting inclusive decision-making processes.


On a personal note, Mr. Owens is firmly grounded in his family life. He has been married for 32 years to his wife, Kelly, and is the father of Clifford Jr. and Danielle. His family serves as his greatest inspiration and motivates his commitment to improving educational outcomes.


Expressing his enthusiasm, Mr. Owens stated, "I am excited to join the Jaguar family and look forward to building on the strong foundation already in place at Washington Academy and High School. Together, we will foster a culture of excellence and innovation that empowers all scholars to lead and thrive."


As Mr. Owens begins his new role, Somerset County Public Schools extends its gratitude to Mr. Shelton Handy for his service as Acting Principal throughout the 2024-2025 academic year. Mr. Handy's leadership has been crucial in maintaining a positive learning environment, and he will continue to serve as Assistant Principal.
