ANOTHER FIRE INVESTIGATED AT EASTERN CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTE

Westover, MD - A concerning pattern is unfolding at Maryland's Eastern Correctional Institute. Yet another fire has occurred at the state-run correctional facility, pointing to possible systematic and operational challenges that need to be addressed urgently.
The incident took place on February 7, 2025, at around 6:40 PM. It was a small fire that broke out in a jail cell within the premises of the masonry state detention facility/prison.
Though the monetary damage was just $25 dollars, the occurrence of such incidents in a highly secure and controlled environment raises questions on the overall safety measures and precautions in place.
The discovery of the fire was by the ECI staff. The fire was so minimal that the smoke alarm and fire sprinkler system did not detect it. Once discovered, the staff guided the inmate to extinguish the fire in the toilet.
At this juncture, preliminary investigations point towards an incendiary cause. Further investigations will shed more light on this matter.
