WESTOVER, MD-A devastating fire at the James Nelson Farm on Stewart Neck Road caused an estimated loss of a million dollars. The fire destroyed a large agricultural storage building and various pieces of farm equipment. It broke out late in the evening on March 15, 2024, and it took local firefighters three hours to get it under control.

The fire was initially spotted in an 1100 Case International Tractor inside the 40'x100' agricultural storage building. The owner and farm employees attempted to fight off the flames with portable fire extinguishers, but unfortunately, their efforts proved insufficient to control the spreading fire.

The Princess Anne Volunteer Fire Department was the first to respond, along with several others from around the area. They sounded two alarms, dispatching 57 firefighters to tackle the blaze.

Despite the magnitude of the fire, the team managed to bring it under control after three long hours of relentless efforts, and thankfully, no injuries or deaths were reported.

Once the fire was extinguished, a preliminary investigation suggested the cause was an unspecified mechanical or electrical issue with the tractor. The fire then rapidly spread to other parts of the building, housing several other farm equipment vehicles.

While the estimated loss to structure and contents is currently pegged at a staggering $1,000,000, a detailed assessment is still underway. The agricultural storage building, a significant asset to the James Nelson Farm, was used to store crucial farming machinery and equipment, all of which were caught in the fire.
