18 YEAR OLD CHARGED FOLLOWING MOTOR VEHICLE CRASH
CAMBRIDGE, MD - On February 21, 2024, Cambridge Police Department officers served a criminal summons to an 18-year-old Cambridge, MD resident, Daejore Meliceo Matthews, following an investigation of a motor vehicle collision that took place last year.
The charges against Matthews include possession of a firearm by a minor, having a handgun in a vehicle, possession of a loaded handgun in a vehicle, carrying a handgun on person, and carrying a loaded handgun on person.
These charges stem from an incident that transpired on October 23, 2023, at approximately 5:03 p.m.
On that date, Cambridge Police Department officers were called to the scene of a Motor Vehicle Collision (MVC) with injuries at the intersection of Stone Boundary Rd and Cambridge Beltway.
Matthews, who was found to be the owner and driver of one of the vehicles involved in the collision, was among those injured.
Investigation into the accident led to the discovery of a loaded 40-caliber Glock handgun in the vehicle that Matthews was operating. According to laws, Matthews was prohibited from possessing a firearm due to his age.
Following the MVC, Matthews was hospitalized at the University of Maryland Shore Medical Center to receive treatment for his injuries.
After the fact, the Cambridge Police Department's officers applied for charges against Matthews. The Court Commissioner subsequently issued a criminal summons.
The case highlights the ongoing issues and concerns surrounding illegal firearm usage and possession, particularly among minors, and emphasizes the critical role of thorough and diligent police work in ensuring public safety.
