A RESIDENTIAL STRUCTURE FIRE TAKES THE LIFE OF 20 ANIMALS IN NEWARK

Newark, MD – The Worcester County Fire Marshal’s Office investigated a residential structure fire, which occurred in the 9200 block of Croppers Island Road in Newark, MD.

The Newark Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched for a reported house fire at 11:12 AM in the morning. Upon arrival, crews experienced significant fire conditions throughout the two-story single-family home.

Early into the incident, an evacuation of interior crews was ordered after a firefighter fell through the 2nd floor and the building partially collapsed.

Assistance was requested from Ocean City, Showell, Berlin, Stockton, Powellville, and Willards fire departments. Firefighters spent 4.5 hours on the scene, bringing the fire under control, and estimate they flowed over 50,000 gallons of water during the event.

The American Red Cross provided assistance for three adults who lived in the home. Unfortunately, over 20 animals were believed to have perished in the fire.

The exact cause of the fire is considered accidental and is believed to be contributed by a portable heating appliance. No injuries were reported.
